What I Learned From a Cartoon Viking Dad

One of the most ingenious cartoon franchises is the “How To Train Your Dragon” series. The movies and the TV series cannot be any farther from the books. We enjoy watching them as a family, however the books I’ve had two tries and barely made it past the first chapter. How somebody was so impressed with the books in order to make such a powerful and big budget series, I have no idea. However, I’m glad they gave it a shot.

Here’s what happened to this ADD dad during worship at our assembly. I have no idea why I would be randomly replaying scenes from cartoons in my head while singing praise songs. It doesn’t surprise me though. What happened shows me the depth and patience in my Abba’s love.

I don’t remember the song but it was Yom Teruah. We were singing of the coming King. All of the sudden, I thought of the scene in the “Dragon” toon where the burly dad says to his son, “You gotta walk like us, talk like us, think like us. (Gesturing with two hands) No more of this.”

Hiccup, his scrawny son, says, “You just gestured to all of me.”

I started thinking about how physically puny and scarred i am, and mentally inadequate I am to make much of a difference; to slay many big dragons.

Suddenly, my mindset changed as I receive the picture, if you will, of the heavenly father desiring to use me. To have me as His chosen child  Tears welled up (in non-Viking style) as I whispered the words, “You just gestured to all of me.”
